The MICHELIN Key is now a benchmark Vietnam’s top hotels are measured against. The country’s count rose from 13 to 21 in a year, according to the MICHELIN Guide’s 2026 Vietnam selection, published on 18 September 2026.

The winners are mostly branded. Hotel groups run 17 of the 21, and IHG alone has four. Only four are independent, and all four are new this year. For owners, the question is no longer whether the Key matters in Vietnam. It is what it takes to get one and where the gaps are.

The Key also sits on a commercial platform. MICHELIN Guide hotel pages take bookings, and verified guest scores from those stays help decide whether a hotel stays in the selection.

Key facts

  • Vietnam total: 21 Key hotels in 2026, up from 13 in 2025
  • By level: 2 Three Keys, 4 Two Keys, 15 One Key
  • Movement: 8 new hotels, 1 promotion (Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi), no losses
  • Operators: 17 group-run, 4 independent. IHG leads with 4
  • Upper tiers: all six Two- and Three-Key hotels are group-run

What a Key is

MICHELIN calls the Key the hotel equivalent of the MICHELIN Star. Its full-time inspectors visit anonymously, book under an assumed name and pay the bill in full (MICHELIN Guide 101). Only hotels already in the MICHELIN Guide’s hotel selection are eligible.

Level MICHELIN wording MICHELIN’s definition, in short
Three Keys An extraordinary stay One of the world’s most remarkable stays
Two Keys An exceptional stay Unique, with a memorable stay guaranteed
One Key A very special stay A gem with personality that gives more than others at its price

What the 21 have in common

Chart of Vietnam’s MICHELIN Key hotels by operator type, setting and room count, coloured by Key level. All Two- and Three-Key hotels are group-run; both Three-Key hotels have under 60 rooms

Takeaway: the upper tiers belong to hotel groups. Size is no barrier: the top two have under 50 rooms, but a 358-room hotel holds Two Keys.

Operator type vs Key level

Operator type Hotels Three Keys Two Keys One Key
Hotel group 17 2 4 11
Independent 4 – – 4

Every Two- and Three-Key hotel is group-run. The independents all entered at One Key this year.

Setting vs Key level

Setting Hotels Three Keys Two Keys One Key
Beach or island resort 9 1 3 5
City or town hotel 7 1 1 5
River, mountain or heritage retreat 5 – – 5

Beach and island resorts hold four of the six upper-tier Keys. The five river, mountain and heritage retreats all hold One Key, and four of them are new.

Size vs Key level

Rooms Hotels Three Keys Two Keys One Key
Under 60 rooms 5 2 – 3
60 to 149 rooms 8 – 3 5
150 rooms or more 5 – 1 4

Based on 18 hotels with reliable room counts. Both Three-Key hotels have under 50 rooms. Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, with 358 rooms, shows scale doesn’t rule out Two Keys.

Brand and design patterns

  • Collections and soft brands: five hotels sit in a collection rather than a hard brand: two MGallery, one Autograph Collection and two SLH members.
  • Repeat brands: Six Senses (Con Dao, Ninh Van Bay) and MGallery (Sa Pa, Yen Tu) each have two Key hotels.
  • Bill Bensley: designed three, Capella Hanoi, InterContinental Danang and Legacy Yen Tu, according to MICHELIN and VnExpress.
  • Food and the Key are judged apart: InterContinental Danang’s La Maison 1888 holds a MICHELIN Star, but MICHELIN decides Stars and Keys independently.

Where they are

What it means for owners and operators

1. You can’t buy a Key, but you can get on the radar

Inclusion in the MICHELIN Guide is free. Hotels can ask for an inspector visit through MICHELIN’s Contact Us page. Inspectors decide alone and visit unannounced. There is no Key application: a hotel must first be in the selection, and then any selected hotel is eligible.

2. Run the five criteria as an internal audit

MICHELIN criterion Question for your team (our framing)
A destination in itself, adding to the local experience Would a guest come for the hotel, not just the location?
Excellence in architecture and interior design Does the design have a point of view, or could it be anywhere?
Quality and consistency of service, comfort and maintenance Would an unannounced stay on a busy night match a VIP stay?
Singularity: a character of its own What can guests get here and nowhere else?
Value: experience matches price At today’s ADR, does the stay beat comparable hotels?

Criteria from MICHELIN Guide 101. The questions are ours.

3. The white space is real

21 of Vietnam’s 34 provinces have no Key hotel. They include Hai Phong, Gia Lai, Quang Ngai, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Dong Nai. Within Key provinces, there is still no Key hotel in Ha Long or Da Lat.

Independents hold only 4 of 21 Keys, all at One Key. MICHELIN’s own 2026 announcement credits independent hotelkeepers with driving new concepts. For an independent owner, the One-Key tier is the realistic entry point. The upper tiers have so far gone only to groups.

4. A Key is a standard to keep, not a one-off

MICHELIN has published a new Vietnam selection each year since 2025. Verified guest scores on its platform play a role in whether a hotel stays in the selection. Hotels can lose a Key: Head for Points reports several UK hotels dropped a level or lost their Key in 2026. In Vietnam, all 13 of 2025’s Key hotels kept theirs.

We found no published data on rate or occupancy gains for Key hotels in Vietnam. Treat the Key as a reputation and distribution asset, not a forecast line.

  • New provinces. Watch whether the 21 provinces without a Key hotel start to appear.

FAQ

How does a hotel get considered for a MICHELIN Key?

It must first be in the MICHELIN Guide’s hotel selection. Any selected hotel is eligible for a Key. Hotels can ask for an inspector visit through MICHELIN’s Contact Us page, and inspectors visit the next time they are in the area.

Are there fees to be listed or to get a Key?

No. MICHELIN says inclusion in the Guide is free of charge. Inspectors pay their own bills. Separately, MICHELIN Guide pages take hotel bookings. We could not find MICHELIN’s commercial terms for that channel.

Can we apply for a Key?

Not directly. You can ask for a visit to be considered for the selection. Inspectors are the sole decision-makers on Keys.

How often is the list updated?

Each year so far. Vietnam’s first list came in 2025 and the second on 18 September 2026. MICHELIN said at launch that the Key would distinguish hotels each year.

Can a hotel lose its Key?

Yes. MICHELIN says verified guest scores play a role in whether a hotel stays in the selection, and Head for Points reports UK hotels that lost Keys in 2026. No Vietnamese hotel lost one this year.

Is a Key the same as a MICHELIN Star?

It is the hotel equivalent, but they are separate awards. MICHELIN decides Stars and Keys independently, and a Key hotel doesn’t need a Starred restaurant.
