How many hotels in Vietnam hold a star rating? 3,408 at the end of 2024, with 229,082 rooms, according to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. For owners, investors and operators, the useful number is the top end: five-star hotels are 8% of rated hotels but hold 38% of rated rooms, and their room count grew by 8.3% in 2025 while four-star shrank.

Vietnam has far more places to stay than rated hotels. The ministry counted about 38,000 accommodation establishments with 780,000 rooms in 2020, including guesthouses, homestays and unrated hotels. Most of those do not hold a star rating, so the rated count covers only part of the market, but it is the best official guide to upscale supply.

3-star 511 32,790 64

The ministry also listed 20 four- and five-star apartment hotels with 12,798 rooms, 1 one- to three-star apartment property with 23 rooms, and 81 rated cruise ships with 1,445 cabins. They are not in the hotel total.

Bar chart of Vietnam’s star-rated hotels at the end of 2024: 268 five-star, 354 four-star, 511 three-star, 886 two-star and 1,389 one-star, 3,408 hotels and 229,082 rooms in total

Takeaway: one-star hotels are the most numerous, but the average five-star hotel has about 16 times as many rooms.

Five-star grew in 2025, four-star did not

Rating End-2024 hotels End-2024 rooms End-2025 establishments End-2025 rooms Change in rooms
5-star 268 87,563 291 94,819 +7,256 (+8.3%)
4-star 354 48,736 345 47,536 −1,200 (−2.5%)

Bar chart comparing four- and five-star rooms in Vietnam at the end of 2024 and 2025: five-star rose from 87,563 to 94,819 and four-star fell from 48,736 to 47,536

Takeaway: new upscale supply is going in at five-star, and the four-star tier is shrinking slightly.

The two years are not a perfect match. The 2024 figures count rated hotels, and the 2025 figures, from the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, count rated accommodation establishments. Ratings also lapse and are renewed, so some movement is administrative.

How the total has grown

Year Accommodation establishments Rooms
2011 about 13,000 about 265,000
2020 about 38,000 about 780,000

These totals include every type of licensed accommodation. The ministry’s note did not give a more recent total, and we have not found one published since.

Bar chart of open hotels in Vietnam by international group, by each group’s latest count: Accor 45, Marriott 32, IHG 24, Hilton 21, Ascott 16, Hyatt 10 and Minor Hotels 4

Takeaway: Accor reports the most hotels in Vietnam, and Accor says Vietnam is its third-largest market in Asia outside India and Greater China.

These counts come from each company on different dates and may include serviced apartments, franchised hotels or hotels not star-rated in Vietnam, so they cannot be added to the ministry’s totals. Hilton has opened at least one hotel since its February count, NHAAN Hoi An under its Tapestry Collection brand in August 2026. We found no recent Vietnam count from Wyndham or Meliá.

In our database, 101 of the 291 five-star records match an international brand, 34 a Vietnamese brand and 156 no brand on our lists. Our brand lists are incomplete, so treat the branded share as a minimum.

What it means for owners, investors and job seekers

1. Upscale supply is growing faster at five-star than four-star

Five-star rooms grew by 8.3% in 2025 while four-star rooms fell. Our view: owners of four-star hotels face more five-star competition on rate, particularly in coastal markets where most five-star stock sits.

2. Coastal provinces, not cities, hold most five-star rooms

Khanh Hoa and Da Nang have more five-star hotels in our database than Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City combined. Investors comparing markets should look at resort supply per province, not only city pipelines.

3. International brands still run a minority of hotels

The seven groups above report about 152 open hotels between them. Our view: even allowing for groups not listed, most of Vietnam’s 3,408 rated hotels are independent or domestically branded, which leaves room for conversions and new management deals.

4. For job seekers, the large upscale hotels are where the senior roles are

With an average of 327 rooms, a Vietnamese five-star hotel is a large operation, and most of the senior roles we list are at upscale and luxury hotels. See our hotel jobs in Vietnam and the latest openings roundup.
