It dates from 1876 and describes itself as Thailand’s first hotel. The owner is OHTL, a company listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, and Mandarin Oriental is both its largest shareholder and the hotel’s manager. Owner and operator
OHTL Public Company Limited owns the hotel. The hotel’s current fact sheet lists OHTL under ownership and management, and Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group runs it as part of its portfolio. OHTL has been listed on the SET since June 1988.
Mandarin Oriental took a 49% stake in The Oriental in 1974, which is how the group got its name. Today the SET shareholder register lists Mandarin Oriental Holdings B.V. with 42.39%. Mandarin Oriental’s own 2024 fact sheet gives group equity of 47.6%. We have not reconciled the two figures. Other large holders on the register are Nijaporn Charanachitta (23.22%) and Chao Phraya Development Corporation (10.60%).
On 22 October 2026 the SET valued OHTL at about THB4.0bn. Foreign holdings stood at 48.75%, close to the 49% foreign limit. That limit matters: a foreign buyer cannot simply add to its stake on the market.

Key counts are from each hotel or owner. See our profile of Capella Bangkok.
Our view: Mandarin Oriental has held the top of the Bangkok market for decades with history, service and restaurants. Capella now shares the top MICHELIN rating with a third of the rooms. The Oriental’s answer is breadth: more restaurants, more event space and a bigger guest base than any of its new neighbours, all from one listed owner that does not need to sell.
Why it matters now
Bangkok hotels held about 70% occupancy in the third quarter, but rates slipped, as our Bangkok Q3 market analysis shows. Our read: in a softer rate market, hotels with loyal repeat guests and strong restaurants, like the Oriental, are under less pressure to cut than new hotels still building a base. Nearby on the river, the 726-room Royal Orchid Sheraton is now the subject of a court case between its owner and its former owner, as we report in our news on the lawsuit. That contrast, a stable listed owner versus a contested asset, is part of the Oriental’s value.
What it means for you
1. New riverside hotels: price against the Oriental, not each other
Most luxury guests on the river compare with Mandarin Oriental first. Set your rate ladder with it as the top and show clearly what you offer that it does not.
2. Owners: restaurants hold rate
The Oriental’s 11 restaurants and bars, including a two-star MICHELIN restaurant, bring in local spending and press. That supports room rates when demand softens.
3. Investors: a listed hotel with a stable owner
OHTL is a listed company, and Mandarin Oriental holds the largest stake. Foreign ownership is near its limit. Expect any change of control to be slow and negotiated.
4. Event sales: the Royal Ballroom is mid-sized
At up to 800 guests, the ballroom is big enough for galas, but not for the largest conferences. Riverside hotels with larger rooms can take that business.
