W Bali Seminyak is the 233-key W Bali - Seminyak on Jalan Petitenget, on Batu Belig beach between Seminyak and Canggu. PT Dua Cahaya Anugrah, the company of Indonesian developer Magda Hutagalung, built and owns it. Marriott has run it under the W brand since it opened in March 2011. For owners and operators, W Bali Seminyak is not about the room count. It is a test of whether a lifestyle brand on the beach can keep guests spending at its own bars and restaurants when Seminyak’s beach clubs are a short walk away.

Owner and operator

Starwood signed the hotel in August 2007 with PT Dua Cahaya Anugrah as developer, and named Magda Hutagalung as the company’s president director. Marriott took over the contract when it bought Starwood in 2016. We found no report of a sale of the hotel.

The ownership has a twist. The villas were first designed as The Residences at W Bali - Seminyak, private villas sold to buyers, with the hotel building alongside for guests, according to a 2010 Kompas interview with the developer. They were later put into the hotel’s rental stock. We have not seen how many villas are held by private owners today or how their rental pool works. Anyone valuing the hotel should ask.

We have not confirmed the Marriott management agreement’s term.

Rooms and product

Room counts vary by source. Starwood announced 232 rooms including 80 villas in 2007. Marriott’s current listing gives 152 rooms, 6 suites and 75 villas, which is 233. Some listings give 229. We use 233 and flag the gap.

The beach-club fight

Seminyak and Canggu are Bali’s beach-club strip. Venues such as Potato Head sell sunsets, DJs and day beds to hotel guests from every hotel nearby. For a W, that is a direct threat, because W sells the same thing: music, bars and a party pool.

Our view: the W’s edge is that its guests are already on site and on Marriott Bonvoy. Its weakness is that a beach-club day bed is cheaper than a night in a villa. The hotel’s F&B revenue depends on keeping its own guests at WOOBAR at sunset rather than walking along the beach.

Supply around it

Bali had about 62,000 hotel rooms in the second quarter of 2026, according to Colliers, and about 1,700 new rooms are due by 2029, all five-star and mostly in Ubud and Canggu, as our Bali luxury pipeline analysis explains. Closer to home, SONO Hotels & Resorts will reopen an existing 225-room central Seminyak hotel as SONO Moon in early 2027, as we report in our SONO Moon Bali Seminyak news.

Nearby competitive set Position
W Bali Seminyak Lifestyle luxury, beachfront, 233 keys
SONO Moon Bali Seminyak (2027) Upscale lifestyle conversion, 225 rooms, not beachfront
Canggu five-star pipeline New luxury, mostly villas and smaller resorts
Nusa Dua resorts, such as The Apurva Kempinski Larger, MICE-led, south of the airport

What it means for you

1. Seminyak owners: F&B is the battle, not rooms

New Seminyak supply is limited. Spending on food and drink is not. Keep guests at your own bars with sunset events and packages before they leave for the beach clubs.

2. Villa investors: read the rental pool terms

The W’s villas began as residences. If you own or buy a branded villa, check how the rental pool shares income and costs, and who pays for renovation.

3. Operators: a 2011 resort needs a refresh plan

W Bali Seminyak is 15 years old. Newer lifestyle hotels and the SONO Moon conversion will push it to renovate. Owners should budget for it rather than wait for a brand audit.

4. Brands: the W model works where the party already is

The W picked Seminyak because the nightlife was already there. New lifestyle brands in Bali should follow the guests, not try to create a scene from nothing.
