SONO Moon Bali Seminyak will open in the first quarter of 2027 as a conversion of an existing 225-room hotel in central Seminyak, after SONO Hotels & Resorts Asia signed a management agreement with owner PT Drupadi Management. It is the SONO Moon brand’s first hotel in Bali. The deal adds no new rooms to the island. For Bali owners, that is the story: an older hotel is choosing a new operator and brand, rather than a sale or a rebuild, to compete with the five-star hotels now opening around it.

Key facts

  • SONO Asia portfolio: 17 hotels in Thailand, Indonesia and Japan; more than 13 in the pipeline to 2029

What happened

SONO announced the deal on 20 October. PT Drupadi Management’s president director, Herry Budiman, said SONO Moon fits the property and lets the owner build on its location and facilities. SONO’s senior vice president, Jihong An, said the group’s focus is “not simply to increase the number of hotels” but to work with the right partners and properties.

SONO has not said which hotel it is converting, how much the owner will spend, or how long the agreement runs.

Why it matters: conversions are the cheap route to a brand

Bali’s new supply is almost all at the top. Colliers expects about 1,700 new rooms from late 2026 to 2029, all five-star and mostly in Ubud and Canggu, as we covered in our Bali luxury pipeline analysis. Older mid-market and upscale hotels in Seminyak and Kuta face that new product without the money to rebuild.

Owner option What it costs What it brings
Stay independent Lowest No brand, no loyalty programme, OTA-dependent
Sell the hotel Loses the asset Cash now, at today’s price
Convert to a new brand Renovation plus fees New brand, operator, booking channels and source markets

Our view: the third option is the one more Bali owners will choose. A conversion keeps the land and the hotel, and brings an operator with its own guests. For SONO, it is a fast way to add a Bali flag without waiting years for a new building.

The Korean angle

SONO describes itself as one of South Korea’s leading hospitality groups, and it owns an airline. That gives it something most regional operators lack: access to Korean travellers through its home sales network and, potentially, its own flights. SONO has not said whether Trinity Airways will serve Bali.

The brand also adds to SONO’s Bali push. Colliers named SONO, through its Cross Hotels & Resorts brands, as one of the most active newcomers on the island, with projects in Canggu due in 2028–29.

What it means for you

1. Owners of older Bali hotels: you have a third option

If you cannot afford a rebuild and do not want to sell, a conversion to an operator with its own guests may be better than staying independent. Ask what source markets they bring, not just what brand.

2. Seminyak competitors: a refreshed 225-room rival in 2027

The new SONO Moon will have two pools, a kids’ club and meetings space. That targets families and small groups. Nearby hotels in the same price band should refresh their offer before it opens.

3. Operators: Korean demand is the prize

SONO’s edge is its Korean network. Other Bali hotels should look at their own Korean business and check whether they have the right channels before SONO starts selling.

4. Luxury hotels: little direct impact

A converted lifestyle hotel off the beach does not compete head-on with W Bali Seminyak or the beachfront resorts. It does compete for the same Seminyak bars and restaurants guests.
