QURO Bangkok Riverside opened on 20 October as the first Unscripted by Hyatt hotel in Thailand. The 62-key hotel on Phra Arthit Road, in the Bang Lamphu district beside the Chao Phraya, was until now The StandardX, Bangkok Phra Arthit. Hyatt owns both brands, after buying Standard International in 2024. So this is not a hotel moving to a new operator. It is Hyatt moving a hotel from one of its brands to another. For owners of small independent hotels, the new brand is the more important part of the story.

What happened
Hyatt bought Standard International, the company behind The Standard and The StandardX, in 2024. The StandardX in Bangkok was one of the hotels that came with it. Hyatt has now rebranded it QURO Bangkok Riverside, from the word “curate”, and put it into Unscripted by Hyatt.
Hyatt launched Unscripted in May 2025 as an upscale collection in its Essentials group. Hotels keep their own name and style, follow lighter brand standards and join Hyatt’s booking channels and loyalty programme. The brand is aimed at conversions and older buildings put to new use.
Hyatt has not explained the change. The StandardX was a young brand, and Bangkok industry press has asked why Hyatt dropped it so soon. There is no public evidence that the hotel was doing badly. Earlier, the building operated as Navalai River Resort, and press reports link it to a local family with hotels around Khao San Road. The current owner has not been confirmed.
Why it matters: a lighter brand for small hotels
Most international brands do not want 62-room hotels. The fees, standards and brand rules make them hard to run at that size. Collection brands such as Unscripted, Tapestry and Marriott’s Autograph exist to solve that. The hotel keeps its name and design, and the brand brings guests through its website, apps and loyalty points.
For Bangkok’s old town, that matters. Phra Arthit, Bang Lamphu and the riverside near the Grand Palace are full of small, design-led hotels. Most are independent and rely on online travel agents. A light brand is a way to get more direct bookings without rebuilding.
The wider market adds pressure. Bangkok occupancy held at 70% in the third quarter but the average rate fell 3.9%, as we covered in our Bangkok Q3 market news. Small independents with no loyalty programme are the most exposed when rates soften. Conversions are spreading across the region too, from SONO Moon in Seminyak to Marriott’s seven-hotel deal in Thailand.
What it means for you
1. Owners of small independent hotels: you have more options
You no longer need a full brand to get loyalty guests. Collection brands like Unscripted take hotels of 50 to 100 keys and leave your name in place. Compare their fees with what you pay OTAs today.
2. Riverside hotels in the old town: a branded rival next door
QURO now sells to World of Hyatt members. Independent riverside hotels nearby should check their direct-booking offers and reviews.
3. Operators: brand changes after a takeover are normal
When a group buys another group, it often moves hotels between its brands. Owners of hotels in acquired brands should read their contracts for rebranding rights.
4. Investors: the value is in the location
Sixty-two keys next to a river pier, near the Grand Palace and Khao San Road, has survived three different names. The address keeps its value even when the brand changes.
